TrueMetaverse review
A playful, self-hosted meeting space for communities that want collaboration and customization.

TrueMetaverse is a browser-based, self-hosted 2D virtual world for meetings, study groups, presentations, collaboration, and games. Participants move through shared pixel-art spaces, communicate through realtime chat, and join audio and video rooms. Room creation uses join codes, while customizable player characters, persistent study timers, leaderboards, and a Hide & Seek mode give communities more structure and personality than a conventional meeting room. It is best suited to study communities, learning groups, and collaborative teams that want control over deployment and a more spatial way to meet.
Its platform fit is centered on a web client and a Docker-based deployment model. The TypeScript monorepo includes WebSocket, PostgreSQL, LiveKit, Redis, and Docker components, while Excalidraw supports the synchronized collaborative whiteboard. Screen sharing and presentation mode cover structured sessions, and room-scoped chat keeps conversation tied to each space. This combination makes TrueMetaverse a practical fit for teams comfortable assembling and maintaining a self-hosted stack, particularly when realtime presence and shared visual spaces matter as much as video calls.
The access model is a meaningful constraint: guest access is false and rooms are invite-only, with account creation required before joining or creating a room in the documented live-demo flow. That makes the product less suitable for public drop-in events, customer meetings, or situations where attendees should join without accounts. Communities that value ownership, extensibility, and playful collaboration should consider TrueMetaverse; teams seeking broadly accessible meeting links or a conventional hosted meeting workflow should choose an alternative.
