TRAX LRS review
A feature-rich self-hosted LRS for teams that need control over learning records.

TRAX LRS is an open-source Learning Record Store for collecting, storing, exploring, and managing learning data from LMS platforms, simulations, and workplace training. It is designed for organizations that want control over xAPI records and deployment architecture, particularly teams operating their own infrastructure. The product supports web and API access, with xAPI-compliant storage and exploration for statements, activities, agents, persons, profiles, and states. Moodle, xAPI-compliant LRSs, and several database and search systems are part of its integration landscape.
Governance is a central strength. TRAX LRS supports multiple independent data stores, user roles, store-level access controls, and API client management with configurable permissions. It also logs authentication, commands, and API calls. Scheduled validation, pseudonymization, cleanup, and clearing jobs add operational controls for ongoing data management. These capabilities make it a fit for teams that need to separate data stores and manage access in a structured way. The documentation distinguishes between an open-source Starter Edition and a privately licensed Extended Edition, allowing organizations to consider the edition that matches their deployment needs.
The product also covers practical data movement and interoperability: records can be exported to files, other LRSs, and databases, while integrations include Elasticsearch, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and OpenSearch. Its CMI5 token delivery API is useful for workflows that require CMI5 support alongside xAPI storage. The trade-off is deployment responsibility: TRAX LRS is self-hosted, and its stores are not designed for multi-tenant use. Choose it when infrastructure control, access governance, and data processing depth matter more than managed convenience. Teams seeking a multi-tenant service or a hosted deployment should consider an alternative.
TRAX LRS pros and cons
- Where it wins

- Multiple stores, roles, and permissions support governed access control.
- CMI5 delivery, exports, scheduled jobs, and database integrations broaden use cases.
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment places infrastructure responsibility on the organization.
- Stores are not designed for multi-tenant deployments.
- Extended Edition requires a private license.
