TouchDesigner review
A GPU-driven toolkit for interactive VFX, projections, installations, and live visuals.

TouchDesigner is a node-based visual development platform for real-time interactive media, visual effects, projections, live visuals, installations, VR experiences, and data-driven graphics. Its interconnected operators combine video, images, 3D scenes, audio, devices, protocols, and software tools, making it suited to artists, technical directors, schools, live production teams, and installation designers working on Windows or macOS.
The published plans use perpetual, one-time licensing. The free Non-Commercial edition supports personal use or learning, includes basic operations, has a 1280x1280 resolution limit, and is not for paying projects. Educational costs $300 one time for schools, faculty, and students, adding maximum GPU resolution, real-time H.264/H.265 export, TouchEngine support, and forum support. Commercial costs $600 one time and adds use in paying projects, maximum GPU resolution, real-time H.264/H.265 export, and forum support. Pro costs $2,200 one time and adds all TouchDesigner features, multi-process and multi-machine synchronization, hardware frame-lock, camera-tracking integrations, and Pro Support with six hours included. Updates are handled separately.
Its strongest distinction is breadth in real-time visual systems rather than a narrow compositing workflow. GPU-based compositing and image processing sit alongside chroma-key matte generation, 3D scenes, shaders, particle and fluid simulations, projection mapping, multi-projector output, Python scripting, and TouchEngine embedding. Integrations include VST audio plugins, HTC Vive, Oculus VR, Stype camera tracking, BlackTrax, WrnchAI, Vioso, and Scalable Display. Choose TouchDesigner when interactive output, physical installations, synchronization, or live control matter. Choose a conventional compositing suite instead when the priority is a traditional compositing-focused workflow.
