Tinderbox review
A deep, local-first Mac note system for complex linked projects.

Tinderbox is a desktop note-taking and personal information management application for macOS. It is aimed at writers, researchers, journalists, academics, planners, and professionals who need to capture information, connect ideas, and organize complex projects. Notes can be edited and arranged in map, timeline, chart, outline, and dashboard views, while visual links and relationship mapping help show how information connects. Local document storage also supports offline work, and AI recognition can identify addresses, names, and organizations.
Its standout strength is the depth of its organization model. Agents can search and organize notes automatically, while prototypes and inherited note attributes provide a way to apply structure across a project. Custom project views, timelines, charts, and dashboards extend the app beyond straightforward note capture. Imports and workflows involving Apple Notes, Evernote, DEVONthink, Dropbox, iCloud, and Simplenote broaden its fit for people consolidating information from other tools. Exports to HTML, XML, RSS, and OPML are useful when notes need to move into other formats or publishing workflows.
Pricing is centered on a $289 one-time Tinderbox license, which includes one year of free upgrades and Eastgate support. The Household option costs $325 one time for up to five people living in the same household, while the Ten Pack costs $645 one time for schools, libraries, and work teams. A Subscribe plan provides annual updates and can be canceled anytime. There is no free plan. Tinderbox makes the most sense for Mac users who will use its linked, visual, and structured workflows regularly; people seeking a simple, low-cost, or cross-platform note-taking app should look elsewhere.
