TeleSculptor is a free, open-source desktop application from Kitware for photogrammetry involving aerial imagery and video. It is aimed at users who need structure-from-motion camera and landmark estimation, dense depth maps, surface meshes, geolocation, and research-oriented algorithm configuration. The workflow runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with support for aerial video, image sequences, GPS and IMU metadata, ground control points, and common point-cloud and mesh export formats.

Its strongest fit is a reconstruction workflow that benefits from geospatial context and direct control over processing stages. Structure-from-motion estimates camera parameters and sparse 3D landmarks, multiview stereo generates dense depth maps, and depth-map fusion creates colored surface meshes. Ground control point editing supports geolocation, while plugin-based algorithm configuration gives research users a way to work with configurable processing methods. PLY and LAS point-cloud exports, plus PLY, OBJ, LAS, and VTP mesh exports, also support downstream 3D and GIS-oriented workflows.

TeleSculptor is less suitable when orthophoto production, browser access, cloud processing, or an automated public API is central to the project. Its published scope is concentrated on desktop reconstruction rather than a broader production platform with verified orthophoto output or documented API access. Choose it for a free, open-source tool focused on aerial reconstruction, geospatial metadata, control points, and exportable 3D results. Choose an alternative when the workflow depends on those unverified capabilities or on hosted, integration-heavy processing.

TeleSculptor pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Free, open-source desktop software for Windows, macOS, and Linux
    • Processes aerial video and image sequences with geospatial metadata
    • Exports point clouds and meshes in PLY, LAS, OBJ, and VTP
  • Where it doesn't
    • No documented orthophoto export
    • No documented public processing API
    • Desktop deployment limits browser-based and cloud workflows
