Tekla Structures is a structural BIM application for engineers, designers, detailers, fabricators, contractors and project managers. It covers multi-material 3D modeling, structural detailing, production drawings, reports, schedules, quantities and construction information management. The software is particularly suited to teams working across steel, concrete, precast and rebar workflows, with support for design coordination and project delivery.

Its subscription structure is divided into Carbon, Graphite and Diamond. Carbon focuses on opening and viewing models, logistics planning, sequencing, scheduling, status visualization, reports, print drawings, and steel CNC, MIS and rebar manufacturing exports. Graphite adds modeling for parts, steel assemblies, precast cast units and concrete pour units, plus general arrangement, rebar and anchor bolt drawings, analysis and design interfaces, and IFC reference models. Diamond adds steel and concrete components, production drawings, fully detailed multi-material 3D models and fabrication information. A Trial plan provides 30 days of access to Tekla Structures Diamond. Subscription pricing requires contact with a local sales team.

The platform’s strongest fit is for organizations that need detailed structural coordination from model creation through fabrication and construction. IFC workflows, clash detection through Clash Check Manager, quantity takeoff, Tekla Model Sharing, Trimble Connect and the Tekla Open API support collaboration and automation across architectural, MEP, plant-design, analysis, MIS and production systems. Mobile access is documented through Trimble Connect for viewing and collaborating on cloud-enabled project information, rather than native Tekla Structures modeling on mobile. Teams needing detailed structural production workflows should consider Tekla Structures; teams seeking lightweight modeling or native mobile authoring may prefer a narrower alternative.

Tekla Structures pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Multi-material 3D modeling with detailed production drawings
    • Clash checking, quantities, logistics and construction information workflows
    • Tekla Open API, IFC support and cloud collaboration options
  • Where it doesn't
    • Subscription pricing requires contact with a local sales team
    • Mobile access is for viewing and collaboration, not native modeling
    • The broad feature set may exceed the needs of simpler BIM workflows
