Swell review
Flexible subscriptions for physical and digital products across hosted and headless stores.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Swell is a headless commerce platform for developers, agencies, brands, and ecommerce teams selling physical or digital products through subscription models. It supports hosted storefronts as well as custom storefronts, checkout, APIs, payment gateways, fulfillment workflows, and customer account management. Its subscription tools cover monthly, yearly, custom, and prepaid terms, with mixed carts for one-time and recurring products. This makes it a fit for sellers that need more control than a fixed subscription storefront can provide.
Swell’s pricing scales by plan and annual sales ceiling. Starter costs $29 per month when billed annually and includes hosted storefronts, built-in subscriptions, up to 2 admin users, a $50K annual sales ceiling, and basic reports. Basic costs $79 per month billed annually, raises the admin limit to 5 and the sales ceiling to $250K. Standard costs $299 per month billed annually and adds priority support, up to 15 admin users, a $1M annual sales ceiling, advanced reports, and international price lists. Unlimited costs $2250 per month billed annually and includes unlimited admin users, role-based permissions, developer support, advanced reports, and a $5M annual sales ceiling. Custom pricing is available for merchants doing over $10M in annual sales.
The strongest fit is a commerce operation that needs configurable recurring schedules, separate billing and fulfillment intervals, automatic payment retries, dunning rules, and customer pause, skip, and resume controls. Integrations include Algolia, Avalara AvaTax, Braintree, Contentful, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, SendGrid, ShipStation, Slack, TaxJar, Vercel, Yotpo, and Zapier. Hosted and headless storefront options support different implementation preferences, while backend and frontend APIs support custom builds. Swell is less suitable for sellers seeking a free plan, very small administrative teams that need broader access immediately, or businesses that do not need subscription and headless commerce flexibility.
