Subsample review
A focused open-source sampler for live capture, sound analysis, and MIDI-driven manipulation.

Subsample is an open-source, headless sampler for musicians, sound designers, and developers who want to capture audio, divide it into usable samples, and control playback through MIDI. It records live audio or imports existing files, detects individual sound events, and organizes samples by acoustic similarity. The software runs on Linux and macOS, with Windows supported through WSL2. Its terminal-based workflow suits users comfortable with configuration files and command-line tools rather than those looking for a conventional graphical sampler.
The standout capability is its combination of automatic analysis and flexible sample manipulation. Subsample can assign samples by acoustic similarity, map notes through YAML, and apply per-sample filtering, compression, pitch shifting, time stretching, and beat quantization. Chopped loops can use onset-aligned time mapping, round-robin playback, random playback, or indexed segment playback. Support for WAV, BWF, FLAC, AIFF, OGG, and MP3/MPEG covers common sample sources, while multichannel recording, downmixing, upmixing, and output routing expand its usefulness for complex audio setups.
Its ecosystem is focused rather than broad: hardware and virtual MIDI are supported, OSC is optional, and Subsequence is listed as an integration. The standalone-only design means it is not aimed at producers who need a sampler plugin inside a digital audio workstation. The lack of a graphical interface also makes onboarding more configuration-heavy than in visual sampling tools. Choose Subsample for open-source capture, event detection, similarity-based assignment, and programmable playback across Linux, macOS, or Windows through WSL2. Choose an alternative if plugin hosting or a graphical workflow is central to your setup.
