SquirrelMail review
A free, open-source webmail client for self-hosted IMAP and SMTP setups.

SquirrelMail is a self-hosted webmail package written in PHP for people who want browser-based access to IMAP and SMTP servers. It provides core email functions, including reading and composing messages, MIME support, attachments, priorities, spell checking, folders, and personal or shared address books. Its HTML interface does not require JavaScript, making it a focused option for administrators and users who prefer a straightforward webmail client. SquirrelMail is distributed as open-source software under the GNU General Public License and has been developed since 1999.
The main strength is its practical email foundation. Administrators install the package on a web server with PHP, then connect it to an IMAP server for message access and an SMTP server for sending. Users can create, delete, rename, subscribe to, and unsubscribe from folders, while plugin-based extensions provide a path for additional functionality. Multiple language translations broaden its usability, and the use of established IMAP and SMTP protocols supports standard mail-server arrangements. This makes SquirrelMail a sensible fit for self-hosters who want control over deployment rather than a hosted mailbox service.
Its scope is deliberately narrow. SquirrelMail is web-only, and the published positioning does not include a verified unified inbox, offline mode, or scheduled sending. Calendar functionality appears among optional plugins rather than the core client, so it should not be chosen as an all-in-one productivity workspace. There are also no AI features. Choose SquirrelMail when free, open-source, JavaScript-free webmail with core IMAP and SMTP support is the priority; choose an alternative when native apps, offline access, unified account management, or broader collaboration features matter more.
