SQL LRS is an open-source Learning Record Store for receiving, validating, storing, and exposing xAPI statements, attachments, and documents. It is aimed at developers, data engineers, learning engineers, government, education, and enterprise teams that need control over learning-data infrastructure. The web administration interface supports credential management, statement browsing, monitoring, authentication, and API scope management. OpenID Connect authentication is also supported, alongside configurable reactions for conditional logic and generated xAPI statements.

The Community / Open Source plan is Apache 2.0 licensed, self-hosted, and backed by SQL storage. Deployment options include SQLite, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and MySQL, giving teams flexibility to align the LRS with an existing database environment. SQL LRS supports xAPI 1.0.3 and 2.0.0, stores attachments and documents, and provides CSV statement downloads. Its ecosystem also connects with Apache Superset, Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, and Looker, making it suitable for teams that plan to analyze learning records in established business-intelligence tools.

The main trade-off is operational ownership: SQL LRS is self-hosted rather than vendor-hosted, so the adopting team is responsible for deployment and ongoing infrastructure management. It also lacks multitenancy, which limits its fit for organizations needing separated tenant environments in one system. Separate implementation and support contracts are available, but the product's core positioning remains a free, open-source deployment. Choose SQL LRS when xAPI compatibility, database choice, export access, and direct control matter most. Consider another LRS when managed hosting or multitenant administration is a requirement.

  • Where it doesn't
