Spree Commerce is an open-source ecommerce platform for teams building direct-to-consumer, B2B, marketplace, and multi-channel stores. It covers product catalog and merchandising, checkout, payments, promotions, inventory, digital products, and REST APIs. Its self-hosted model supports web storefronts, point of sale, wholesale portals, mobile applications, and headless implementations, making it particularly suitable for developers who need control over the commerce stack.

The platform’s strongest fit is its breadth across storefront and operational needs. Spree supports Next.js storefronts, online, POS, wholesale, and mobile channels, plus multi-location inventory and stock reservations. Promotions include discounts, free shipping, and coupon codes, while digital products can use access limits and expiring links. Payment integrations include Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, and Razorpay; the wider ecosystem also includes Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, Klaviyo, and Meilisearch. These capabilities give teams room to shape a commerce system around their own channels and workflows.

Pricing starts with the free, open-source Community Edition, which includes self-hosted deployment and community support. Enterprise Edition adds separately licensed paid modules, enterprise support, and multi-vendor, B2B, and multi-tenant capabilities; pricing depends on the modules required and the scale of the implementation. The trade-off is that Spree suits organizations prepared to manage a self-hosted platform and make technical decisions around customization and operations. Choose it for developer-led, API-driven commerce that needs flexibility across channels. A hosted, lower-maintenance storefront solution may be a better fit for teams that do not want to own deployment and platform management.

  • Where it doesn't
