Solidus review
A strong fit for Ruby teams that need control over complex commerce workflows.

Solidus is an open-source ecommerce platform built with Ruby on Rails for brands that need control over storefronts, checkout, catalog logic, promotions, fulfillment, subscriptions, and integrations. It suits Ruby teams building tailored stores, especially where standard ecommerce workflows do not cover complex pricing, inventory, international commerce, or multi-store requirements. The platform supports web, API, and self-hosted deployments, with multichannel sales support and no transaction fee. Its free DIY Edition includes the entire Solidus platform, while the customer manages the infrastructure.
The standout strength is breadth within the commerce engine. Product catalogs can include dynamic variants, bundles, taxonomies, and segmented pricing. Inventory workflows cover backorders, split shipments, returns, exchanges, and WMS or 3PL integrations. Solidus also includes VAT, GST, and sales-tax support, custom promotion rules, customizable checkout, one-click checkout, offline payments, upsells, cross-sells, and native subscriptions with automatic dunning. REST and GraphQL APIs, along with multi-language and multi-currency support, make it suitable for connected commerce stacks. Integrations include payment, tax, shipping, marketing, customer-support, content, and marketplace services such as Affirm, Avalara, EasyPost, Klaviyo, Contentful, and Meta.
The main trade-off is the operational responsibility behind that flexibility. DIY customers manage their own infrastructure, and teams without Ruby on Rails capability may need additional engineering support for implementation and ongoing changes. Solidus Cloud adds managed infrastructure and upgrades through Starter Cloud, plus business-hours technical support and 10 solutions-architect hours per month. Enterprise Cloud adds expedited upgrades, tailored or bring-your-own infrastructure, 24/7 technical support, active incident response, and 20 solutions-architect hours per month. Choose Solidus for a customizable, API-driven commerce foundation; choose another platform if built-in abandoned-cart recovery or a broader marketplace ecosystem is a priority.
