Snipcart review
A flexible cart layer for developers, but not a complete hosted storefront suite.

Snipcart adds ecommerce to existing websites, CMSs, static sites, and web applications through HTML and JavaScript. It is aimed at developers and agencies that want checkout, product sales, payment gateways, shipping, tax management, discounts, inventory, customer accounts, and recovery campaigns without replacing their current site with a hosted storefront builder. Physical, digital, and subscription products are supported, while merchants manage orders and store settings through a hosted dashboard.
The pricing structure separates testing from live commerce. Test development provides a forever-free development environment without requiring a credit card. The Standard plan lists a $20 monthly starting price and adds unlimited physical, digital, and subscription products, a merchant dashboard, APIs and webhooks, inventory management, and abandoned-cart recovery. Live pricing also combines a 2% transaction fee with a $20 monthly minimum, and payment gateway fees are additional. That makes the free tier useful for development, while live merchants need to account for both platform and payment costs.
Snipcart fits projects built with Hugo, Gatsby, Nuxt, Angular, Next.js, React, Svelte, Vue, WordPress, and Laravel, and connects with Stripe, PayPal, Braintree, Mollie, and Square. Its REST API, JavaScript API, and webhooks support custom implementations and integrations. The trade-off is scope: it supplies a cart and commerce layer rather than the broader site-building and ecosystem features found in fuller ecommerce suites. Choose Snipcart when an existing website and developer control are priorities; consider an alternative if you need a complete storefront platform or an app marketplace.
