Shotwell review
A capable free Linux photo manager for organized local libraries.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Shotwell is a free, open-source photo manager for Linux desktops, aimed at people who want to organize and maintain a personal local library. It imports photos from cameras, memory cards, and disks, then arranges them by events, tags, folders, ratings, and dates. Saved searches and filters help users revisit specific groups of images, while support for RAW photos and video files broadens its usefulness beyond basic image browsing.
Its editing and metadata tools give the application more depth than a simple folder viewer. Non-destructive adjustments include cropping, rotation, color adjustment, enhancement, and red-eye correction, so the original media remains separate from the edits. Users can apply face tags, use automatic face detection, and recognize known faces. Shotwell can also write titles, tags, ratings, rotation, and date metadata to supported files, then export media with selectable format, size, quality, and metadata options. The software is free and open source, with no paid plan structure to evaluate.
Shotwell also offers publishing plugins for Flickr, Google Photos, YouTube, Tumblr, and Piwigo, which provides practical sharing options without changing its local-library focus. That focus is also its main boundary: the published positioning excludes cloud synchronization and AI search, and the application is limited to Linux. Choose Shotwell if you want a traditional desktop manager with organization, editing, metadata, RAW, video, and face features at no cost. Consider an alternative if your priority is a cloud-based, multi-device library or AI-assisted discovery, or if you need support beyond Linux.
