Shift is a free, open-source desktop font editor for type designers and developers working with vector glyphs, font files, and variable-font data. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux as a native Electron application, with a TypeScript and React interface and Rust-based font tooling. Its editing workspace includes Bézier contours, point manipulation, Boolean operations, undo and redo, and a searchable glyph grid with thumbnails. Shift loads UFO, TTF, and OTF fonts, making it suited to exploratory font editing and development across common desktop platforms.

Variable-font work is the product's clearest strength. Shift supports Designspace axes, masters, named instances, and interpolation preview, then compiles variable-font tables including fvar and STAT data. This gives designers and developers a focused environment for inspecting and shaping variable-font structures without a paid desktop license. The glyph search tools and contour operations also support routine editing, while the cross-platform desktop format keeps the application accessible across major operating systems.

Shift's current limitations define its audience. It is an unstable developer preview in alpha and is intended for testing rather than production font work. OpenType layout editing is not included, and webfont export is not available; WOFF and WOFF2 export remain planned. Collaboration is also absent, so the workflow centers on individual desktop work. Choose Shift for free, open-source experimentation with glyphs and variable-font data. Choose an alternative when production stability, OpenType feature editing, webfont delivery, or collaborative workflows are essential.
