reveal.js review
A flexible, developer-focused framework for browser-based presentations.

reveal.js is an open-source HTML presentation framework for developers, technical presenters, educators, and organizations that want customizable slide decks hosted and presented through web technologies. Authors can work in HTML or Markdown, then present in a browser using features such as nested vertical slides, Auto-Animate transitions, speaker notes, presenter view, touch navigation, themes, and transitions. The project is free and MIT-licensed, with web and self-hosted deployment options.
Its strongest fit is technical presentation work. LaTeX typesetting and syntax-highlighted code support make it suitable for mathematical explanations, programming demonstrations, and developer education, while the JavaScript API and plugin model support deeper integration with web projects. PDF export is available through browser printing, and offline access is supported. These capabilities give technical users control over presentation structure and behavior without limiting decks to a conventional slide-editor workflow.
The trade-off is a narrower ecosystem and a more developer-oriented workflow. reveal.js does not provide built-in real-time collaboration, PowerPoint import or export, or the broader end-user tooling found in general-purpose presentation software. Choose it when HTML or Markdown authoring, self-hosting, browser delivery, and code-level customization matter most. A conventional presentation application is a better fit for teams that prioritize collaborative editing, PowerPoint compatibility, or a tool designed for non-technical authors.
reveal.js pros and cons
- Where it wins
- HTML and Markdown authoring with nested slides and animations
- Speaker notes, presenter view, touch navigation, and browser playback
- LaTeX, syntax-highlighted code, plugins, and a JavaScript API
- Where it doesn't
- No built-in real-time collaboration
- No PowerPoint import or export
- Requires developer-oriented authoring rather than broad end-user tooling
