ReportLab is a Python-based PDF creation toolkit for developers building dynamic documents, reports, charts, forms, and print-ready files. Its open-source package provides programmatic layout through Platypus and lower-level PDF drawing APIs, while ReportLab PLUS adds RML templates, additional PDF features, and commercial support. It suits teams that want PDF generation inside applications or server-side workflows rather than a primarily visual document editor.

The open-source ReportLab plan is a BSD-licensed toolkit with Python modules for PDF generation and community support. ReportLab PLUS — Non-Financial adds a commercial license and allows up to 30,000 PDF output pages per month, with pricing based on output-page volume. ReportLab PLUS — Financial provides the same published monthly output allowance and a financial-services pricing tier. The plan structure gives developers a free starting point while separating commercial licensing and support from the community-supported package.

Its standout strength is control over document construction: flowables support paragraphs, tables, frames, and page templates; RML supports reusable document templates; and dynamic population works with variables and Python objects. The toolkit also covers CSV-driven mail merge, repeated PDF generation, charts, diagrams, vector graphics, images, interactive fields, encryption, permission controls, bookmarks, annotations, and document outlines. ReportLab works with Python, CSV, XML/RML, databases, flat files, and existing PDFs in the commercial solution. Choose it for code-driven, self-hosted PDF production with extensive document controls. Teams seeking a no-code editor or a primarily visual workflow should consider a different type of PDF tool.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires Python development for programmatic document workflows
