Reolink Image Snapshot is an independent, community-built Node.js utility for Reolink cameras and Home Hubs. It logs in over HTTPS, captures JPEG snapshots from the Reolink Snap API on a clock-aligned schedule, stores timestamped files locally, and can generate MP4 timelapse videos with ffmpeg. Its self-hosted design fits solo operators and small teams managing their own camera and NAS environments.

Storage and observability are its strongest ecosystem features. The utility can upload the latest image, timestamped images, and status data to S3-compatible storage while retaining local JPEG archives. Battery metrics are logged to status.json and exposed through OpenTelemetry/OTLP, with Grafana Cloud listed among the integrations. This combination suits users who want camera captures alongside operational telemetry rather than a standalone video editor.

An interactive setup wizard and Docker deployment guidance reduce the work of configuring the service on a NAS, but administration remains the owner’s responsibility. The project is MIT-licensed and self-hosted, with documentation as its support channel. Its scope is deliberately narrow: Reolink hardware, camera-based sequence input, JPEG capture, and MP4 export. Choose it when Reolink API snapshots, battery visibility, and S3 archiving are priorities; choose another tool if you need raw-photo workflows, broader camera support, or a managed hosted service.

Reolink Image Snapshot pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Clock-aligned scheduling captures Snap API JPEGs at set intervals.
    • S3-compatible uploads plus local timestamped archives support retention.
    • Battery status, OTLP telemetry and ffmpeg timelapse extend monitoring.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supports Reolink cameras and Home Hubs rather than broader camera ecosystems.
    • Self-hosted Docker/NAS deployment requires local administration.
    • Captures JPEG and exports MP4; raw photo support is not included.
