RawTherapee is free, GPLv3-licensed desktop software for developing and processing RAW photographs. It is aimed at enthusiast and professional photographers who want detailed control over camera files across Linux, macOS, and Windows. Alongside most RAW formats, it supports floating-point HDR DNG, JPEG, TIFF, and PNG images. Its workflow centers on parametric image processing rather than layer-based composition, making it a focused choice for photographers refining captures rather than building multi-layer designs.
The strongest part of RawTherapee’s feature set is its combination of non-destructive editing and selective control. Changes can be stored in PP3 sidecar files, while local adjustments, parametric masking, and RT-spot controls support targeted edits. Color management includes DCP and ICC profile support, and lens correction works with Lensfun or Adobe Lens Correction Profiles. Metadata can be preserved, edited, or removed during export, which gives photographers control over how files are prepared for delivery.
For larger shoots, batch editing and synchronized adjustments across selected photos help extend a consistent look across multiple images. Queued image export processing and command-line automation also suit repeatable workflows. GIMP is the listed integration, while the application itself remains a desktop tool for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Choose RawTherapee if free, open-source RAW development, format coverage, masking, and automation are priorities. Choose another editor if layer-based work or a broader integration ecosystem is central to your workflow.
