Qtractor review
A capable free DAW for Linux producers who need audio, MIDI, and plug-in support.

Qtractor is a free, open-source digital audio workstation for GNU/Linux. It is designed for personal home studios, hobbyists, semi-professional musicians, and recording enthusiasts who need multitrack audio and MIDI sequencing, recording, arranging, mixing, and export. Its workflow includes non-destructive, non-linear editing, a built-in mixer, monitor controls, a connection patchbay, a MIDI piano-roll editor, loop recording, takes, and tempo and time-signature maps.
Qtractor’s pricing is straightforward: it is available as open-source software under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later, with no paid tiers to compare. Its ecosystem fit is centered on Linux audio infrastructure. JACK handles audio, ALSA handles MIDI, and the workstation supports LADSPA, DSSI, VST2, VST3, LV2, and CLAP plug-ins. That combination gives Linux producers broad access to plug-in formats and routing options, while audio and MIDI parameter automation supports more detailed production workflows.
The feature set is focused on core music production rather than a wider media suite. Qtractor provides audio clip time-stretching and pitch-shifting, fades, cross-fades, normalization, export, and automation for audio, MIDI, and plug-in parameters. Audio and MIDI track counts are described as unlimited. Linux-only availability makes it a focused choice for producers already working in that environment, but it is less suitable for teams seeking cross-platform access or advanced collaboration. Choose Qtractor for a free Linux workstation with strong sequencing and plug-in integration; consider another DAW for video, score, AI, or advanced collaboration work.
