Pyxel Art Forge review
A focused Windows pixel-art tool with strong animation and Godot tilemap support.

Pyxel Art Forge is a Windows desktop pixel-art application for game developers creating images, sprites, animated assets, and tilesets. Its separate editing modes, project tabs, drawing and selection tools, palettes, layers, and effects support work ranging from individual pixel images to game-ready sprite and tilemap assets. The product is particularly suited to Windows artists building projects in Godot, because its Godot plugin integration covers sprites and tilemaps.
Animation is a central strength. The frame-based timeline includes playback and onion skinning, giving artists tools for creating and comparing animation frames. Custom and preset palettes support controlled color workflows, while layer effects include blur, noise, masks, gradients, outlines, drop shadows, and patterns. For game export, Pyxel Art Forge can create sprite-sheet PNG files with a .pyxelsheet file. Its tile panel and stamp, wrap, and clear tools extend the workflow beyond sprite drawing into tileset construction.
Godot support is the clearest ecosystem fit. The product includes a Godot plugin and project-file support for sprites and tilemaps, alongside animated-tile, auto-tile, and collision-polygon editors. The published Full release costs $18 USD as a one-time purchase and includes the Windows application, image, sprite, and tileset editing modes, and the Godot plugin. A downloadable demo is also available. Choose Pyxel Art Forge if you want a dedicated Windows editor with animation, tileset authoring, and Godot-oriented workflows in one paid application. Choose another tool if you need a macOS or Linux application, a free plan, or AI features.
