Pressbooks is web-based book publishing software for independent authors, publishers, educators, and institutions. It supports writing or importing content, organizing front matter, parts, chapters, and back matter, and applying book themes. Users can manage metadata and ISBN information, generate ebook and print cover files, create webbooks for online reading, and add multimedia, glossaries, footnotes, and interactive activities. Its structured workflow makes it a strong fit for teams and educators publishing books with consistent organization and output requirements.

Pricing is subscription-based and charged per book. The 7-day Free Trial allows users to create one book, but exported files include promotional watermarks. Single Author costs $12 per book per month or $120 per book per year and includes digital book publishing, EPUB and PDF exports, and 20+ themes. Collaboration costs $40 per book per month or $400 per book per year, adding unlimited collaborators, interactive educational material, and H5P interactive activities. The paid tiers suit projects that need continuing access, while the trial is better for evaluating the workflow before committing.

Pressbooks has a broad education and publishing ecosystem. Integrations include Canvas, Moodle, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard, LTI 1.3, H5P, Hypothesis, MathJax, TablePress, and Google Analytics. It supports both reflowable EPUB output and fixed-layout print PDFs, along with digital PDFs, but it does not create fixed-format ebooks. Choose Pressbooks for structured book production, collaborative editing, educational publishing, and multiple export formats. Consider another option if you need a desktop application or a fixed-format ebook workflow.
