PrairieLearn review
A flexible grading platform for code, math, written work, and AI-assisted assessment.

PrairieLearn is an online assessment and learning system for instructors and educational institutions, with a particular fit for technical courses. It supports reusable, code-defined questions with randomized variants, automated grading, and immediate feedback across homework, practice, quizzes, and exams. Responses can include numerical, multiple-choice, graphical, symbolic, and programming work. Persistent browser-based coding workspaces and isolated Docker environments extend its reach beyond conventional quiz delivery, while AI grading covers essays, mathematical proofs, diagrams, handwritten work, and source code.
Pricing is structured by course enrollment rather than by user per month. The Free plan is available to instructors and provides the full platform for courses with up to 20 students in each term. Basic costs $8 per student per course and provides a hosted PrairieLearn plan, while Premium costs $16 per student per course and also provides a hosted PrairieLearn plan. Enterprise uses custom pricing and a custom service agreement. Institutions can also deploy the publicly available open-source software on their own infrastructure, giving PrairieLearn a choice between hosted plans and self-hosted operation.
Its platform fit is strong for institutions already working with learning management systems: LTI 1.3 supports score and roster updates, with integrations for Canvas and Moodle. Reusable question banks and assessments can support repeated course delivery, and APIs add another integration path. PrairieLearn is a good choice for instructors who need randomized technical questions, programming autograding, math assessment, coding workspaces, or broader AI-assisted evaluation. It is less suited to buyers seeking a conventional per-user subscription or a fully managed enterprise arrangement with published pricing; those users will need to weigh the per-student course model, custom Enterprise terms, or the operational demands of self-hosting.
