Polygonal is a free, browser-based editor for polygon surface meshes. It is aimed at users who need to inspect, repair, simplify, or refine mesh files without a signup or subscription. The application supports STL, OBJ, and OFF import and export, runs on desktop and laptop browsers, and keeps files on the user’s computer. After a mesh is loaded, it can continue working offline, making it a practical fit for focused mesh preparation.

Its strongest area is the breadth of mesh-processing operations in a narrow workflow. Polygonal supports triangulation, Loop, Quad-Triangle, and Catmull-Clark subdivision, uniform and adaptive remeshing, and triangle-mesh decimation using surface, normal, and quality criteria. Feature-edge preservation is available during remeshing, decimation, and subdivision. Laplacian smoothing, hole detection and filling, and local vertex deletion, edge flipping, edge splitting, and selection movement add more control for repair and cleanup tasks.

The trade-off is scope. Polygonal is not positioned as a complete 3D modeling environment: it does not include sculpting, animation, parametric modeling, or rendering. That makes it a clear choice for browser-based mesh cleanup and surface processing, but a poor fit for users building a broader asset-production workflow in one application. Choose Polygonal when file conversion, repair, remeshing, simplification, and surface refinement are the priority. Choose an alternative when the work requires sculpting, animation, parametric design, or rendering alongside mesh editing.

Polygonal pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Imports and exports STL, OBJ, and OFF mesh files
    • Includes remeshing, decimation, smoothing, and hole filling
    • Preserves feature edges during key mesh operations
  • Where it doesn't
    • No sculpting, animation, parametric modeling, or rendering
    • Focused on polygon surface meshes rather than full 3D modeling
    • Local editing tools are centered on mesh-level operations
