PointCab Origins review
A broad desktop toolkit for turning laser scans into plans, measurements, and CAD-ready outputs.

PointCab Origins is desktop software for processing point clouds from terrestrial, mobile, UAV, and SLAM laser scanners. It is aimed at surveyors, architects, construction companies, heritage specialists, tradespeople, and CAD/BIM users who need scan-based plans and deliverables. The software can create automatic front, side, and top orthophotos, floor plans, sections, measurements, vector outputs, meshes, volume calculations, and CAD-ready exports. It runs on Windows and macOS, with workflows covering registration, alignment, georeferencing, terrain models, and point-cloud export.
Pricing is structured around a monthly rental and a perpetual core edition. Origins monthly rental costs €420 per month and includes all Origins modules, including point-cloud registration, plus all plugins. The Origins Core perpetual license includes layouts and sections, sketches and measurements, project alignment, Merger, web export, and a transformation calculator. The broader rental package is therefore the clearer fit for teams that need registration, plugins, and the full module set, while Core suits buyers focused on foundational plan, section, alignment, and measurement workflows. The vendor also offers perpetual licenses, subscriptions, monthly rentals, and a time-limited trial.
Its strongest practical advantage is ecosystem fit. CAD/BIM plugins are available for AutoCAD, Archicad, Revit, BricsCAD, ZWCAD, and Vectorworks, while exports support CAD and point-cloud formats. Point-cloud registration can use targets, natural points, or planes, and the software supports coordinate transformation and georeferencing workflows. It also includes triangle-meshed digital terrain models and measurements for areas, distances, angles, volumes, and 3D points. PointCab Origins is a strong choice for CAD/BIM teams producing structured deliverables from scans; teams seeking a browser-first product or a lower-cost entry point should look elsewhere.
PointCab Origins pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Registration supports targets, natural points, and planes
- Creates orthophotos, floor plans, sections, and measurements
- Plugins connect with AutoCAD, Revit, Archicad, and more
- Where it doesn't
- The monthly rental starts at €420
- The Core perpetual plan covers fewer capabilities than the rental
- Desktop processing may not suit teams seeking browser-based workflows
