PoDoFo is a free, portable C++17 library for developers integrating PDF handling into client-side applications. It supports parsing and high-level entity inspection, PDF creation and writing, incremental updates, annotations, form fields, text drawing, font subsetting, Unicode and CJK text extraction, signing, and preservation of PDF/A and PDF/UA characteristics. Its Windows, macOS, and Linux coverage suits native desktop and cross-platform C++ projects that need direct document manipulation rather than a complete viewer stack.

The library’s strongest fit is document-structure work. Developers can inspect and modify existing files, create new PDFs, apply incremental updates, work with forms and annotations, and extract text while retaining support for Unicode and CJK content. Signing includes PAdES-B and RSA/ECDSA support. PDF/A and PDF/UA preservation also makes it relevant when generated or modified documents need to retain those characteristics. A commercial license is available, alongside the free open-source distribution under LGPL 2.0 or later or MPL 2.0.

PoDoFo’s main boundary is rendering: the published operations explicitly do not include it. That makes the library a weaker choice for applications that need a built-in PDF viewer, page rasterization, or a single SDK covering both document processing and display. Android and iOS cross-compilation is known to work but may not be supported. Choose PoDoFo when native C++ PDF parsing, generation, modification, extraction, forms, annotations, or signing are central requirements. Choose an alternative when rendering or broader mobile support is essential.
