PNGGauntlet review
A free Windows utility for lossless PNG compression and parallel batch processing.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
PNGGauntlet is a free Windows desktop utility for reducing PNG file sizes without reducing image quality. It is aimed at people who need straightforward lossless compression for individual images or batches, particularly when their source files include JPG, GIF, TIFF, or BMP images that need conversion to PNG. Its narrow desktop focus makes it relevant for simple Windows-based image workflows rather than broader, cross-platform media pipelines.
Its main strength is the combination of three PNG compressors: PNGOUT, OptiPNG, and DeflOpt. PNGGauntlet can run parallel batch compression and exposes configurable compressor options, giving users more control than a single-action converter. The application supports PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF, and BMP files, but its compression mode is lossless PNG compression. It also offers optional preservation of the gAMA metadata chunk, which provides a specific metadata control without presenting a broad metadata-management system.
The trade-off is its dated support position. PNGGauntlet requires .NET Framework 4.0, runs only on Windows, and the vendor states that it is no longer being updated; the latest listed release is version 3.1.2 from June 17, 2012. That makes it a fit for users who value a free, focused utility and can work within its Windows requirement. Choose another image-compression tool if ongoing development, wider platform coverage, or more extensive metadata controls are central to the workflow.
