Plotly review
A flexible choice for developers building interactive charts, maps, dashboards, and data apps.

Plotly is a suite of open-source graphing libraries and data application tools for developers, data scientists, engineers, analysts, researchers, and organizations building interactive visualizations. Its scope includes Python and JavaScript libraries, Dash analytical web applications, Plotly Studio for AI-assisted analysis and app generation, Plotly Cloud for hosted publishing, and Dash Enterprise for self-hosted deployments. It supports interactive charts and maps, scientific and financial visualizations, static exports, and embeddable experiences across web pages, dashboards, notebooks, and Dash apps.
Pricing separates the free graphing foundation from hosted and creator-oriented capabilities. The Free plan includes Plotly Studio, custom app URLs, one-click publishing from Dash, and Plotly-branded apps. Pro costs $29 per creator seat per month, or $290 per creator seat per year, and adds private apps with viewers, custom domains, customized app branding, and unlimited Dash or Plotly Studio apps. Enterprise adds SOC 2 certification, ISO 27001, 27701, and 42001 certification, SSO and OAuth authentication, secure embedding, and hosting in Plotly's cloud or a customer's cloud. Choose Pro when private publishing and branding matter; choose Enterprise when organizational controls and deployment options are central.
The product's strongest differentiator is breadth within interactive visualization: 70+ chart and trace types, hover, zoom, pan, selection, animation, crossfilter interactions, WebGL and SVG rendering, and exports to SVG, PNG, JPEG, and PDF. Integrations span Dash, Streamlit, Voila, Jupyter Notebook, Google Colab, Databricks Notebook, Azure Notebooks, Hex, Deepnote, Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery, while data connections include PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MotherDuck, Oracle, CSV, and anything Python can connect to. Plotly suits teams building custom visual applications; organizations seeking a single, governance-heavy BI package may prefer a more narrowly integrated platform.
Plotly pros and cons
- Where it wins
- 70+ chart and trace types with rich interactive controls
- Open-source libraries plus Dash and self-hosted deployment
- Broad notebook, cloud, database, and app-platform integrations
- Where it doesn't
- The suite spans several products rather than one packaged application
- Enterprise governance is narrower than dedicated BI platforms
- Plotly-branded apps are part of the Free plan
