PixelWright review
A free, open-source choice for basic rigged pixel animation on Windows and Linux.

PixelWright is an open-source desktop editor for drawing and animating pixel-art sprites. It is aimed at solo creators and small teams making game characters, small pixel-art assets, and short looping animations. The application runs on Linux and Windows and is distributed as portable builds. Its core workspace combines layered canvas editing, adjustable canvas size, zoom, palette management, and layer visibility and ordering, giving users a focused environment for sprite work rather than a broad game-development toolset.
Animation is PixelWright’s strongest area. It supports frame-by-frame editing with frame reordering, automatic interpolation between animation keyframes, and skeleton-and-bone rigging for posing characters. That combination can reduce repetitive frame work while retaining direct control over individual frames. Spritesheet export packages complete animations for use elsewhere, and undo and redo extend across painting, layer, frame, and bone operations. These features make PixelWright a practical fit for basic character animation, especially when rigged posing is more important than a large production pipeline.
The main trade-off is scope. PixelWright covers core drawing, animation, rigging, project saving, and image export, but it lacks verified onion skinning, indexed color, and tilemap support. Its documented export formats are PNG, JPG, and the native PXDR project format, so teams needing broader asset interchange may need another tool. Choose PixelWright for a free desktop workflow centered on small animated sprites and simple rigged characters. Choose an alternative when tilemaps, indexed-color production, onion-skin workflows, or broader export support are central requirements.
