Pion WebRTC is a community-owned, nonprofit, open-source implementation of the WebRTC API written in pure Go. It is designed for developers building real-time audio, video, data-channel, and WebRTC server applications across web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and self-hosted environments. Its examples cover conferencing, broadcasting, browser communication, server-to-server connections, and recording to server-side disk, making it suitable for teams that need direct control over WebRTC behavior rather than a hosted video service.

The published model is open source with a free plan, so there are no paid tiers to compare. The technical surface is broad: Pion provides a PeerConnection API implementation, audio and video sending and receiving, ordered and unordered data channels, ICE restart and Trickle ICE, RTP/RTCP access, media packetization, and packetizers for Opus, PCM, H.264, VP8, and VP9. It also supports WebAssembly for browser applications and integrates with x264, libvpx, GStreamer, and FFmpeg. Server-side recording can save video to disk, with storage handled by the customer.

Pion WebRTC stands out when a Go team needs low-level access to connections, media, transport behavior, and codecs across multiple platforms. Simulcast, scalable video coding, bandwidth estimation, and transport-wide congestion-control feedback extend its usefulness for applications with varied media requirements. The trade-off is the same breadth: this is a toolkit rather than a managed API, so teams must shape the surrounding product and operations themselves. Choose Pion for custom Go-based WebRTC systems and self-hosted control; choose a managed video API when the priority is a higher-level service layer.

Pion WebRTC pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Covers peer connections, media, data channels, ICE, STUN, and TURN
    • Supports RTP/RTCP, codecs, simulcast, SVC, and congestion control
    • Runs across web, desktop, mobile, and self-hosted environments
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires developers to build the application and service layer around it
    • Lower-level than a managed video API
    • Customer-managed storage is required for server-side recordings
