Photon Studio review
A free Photoshop-style editor with broad tools and a caveat around PSD round-tripping.

Photon Studio is a free desktop image editor for photo retouching and design work on macOS, Windows and Linux. It suits solo users and small teams looking for a Photoshop-style editor without a subscription or account requirement. Its toolkit spans layered composition, photo adjustments, RAW processing and design elements, making it relevant to users who want more than a basic image cropper but do not need a paid plan.
The editing workflow covers layers, groups, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects and layer effects. Photon opens and saves PSD and PSB documents, and the vendor cautions that Photoshop features may not round-trip identically. For photo work, a dedicated RAW workspace and Camera Raw Filter sit alongside healing, patch, clone stamp and content-aware fill tools. Selection and background-removal tools run locally, as do editing and AI selection features; the app can also be used without an internet connection. These capabilities make it a broad option to evaluate, though users moving complex Photoshop documents should check whether their specific files preserve the needed features.
Photon Studio is free for personal and commercial use, with the whole app available without a trial or account. It also supports editable text, vector shapes, gradients and artboards, plus imported brushes, actions, layer styles, patterns and swatches. Actions, Batch, Droplets, a CLI and MCP server add automation options, and listed integrations include Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code with Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Choose Photon if you want a free desktop editor with substantial photo and design tooling across operating systems. If exact Photoshop document fidelity is essential, its PSD caveat is a reason to consider alternatives.
