Phluxel review
A focused Windows tool for procedural pixel animation with free and one-time Pro plans.

Phluxel combines a pixel-art editor, cellular-automata studio, and animation exporter in a Windows desktop application. It is aimed at pixel artists, game creators, and other users making animated 2D artwork. Users can draw with pixel-grid tools, import existing artwork, write Phlux rules, simulate changes, animate rule parameters, and export finished loops in several formats. The workflow supports both frame-by-frame work and procedural animation, giving it a narrower focus than a general-purpose 2D animation package.
The Free plan includes the full Phlux editor, CPU and GPU engines, timeline, import tools, user functions, and GIF and PNG-sequence export for personal, non-commercial use. Its exports are watermarked and size-limited. The Pro plan costs $19.99 USD as a one-time purchase and adds watermark-free output, unlimited grid size, resolution, and frames, MP4 and APNG export, commercial use, and priority support. That pricing makes the free edition suitable for exploring the editor and rule system, while Pro is the relevant tier for commercial game assets or unrestricted output.
Phluxel’s defining feature is its Phlux cellular-automata rule language, supported by editor assistance, starter gallery content, and rule templates. Timeline keyframes let users animate rule parameters, while GPU and CPU simulation engines provide two processing options. Import covers PNG, JPG, BMP, animated GIF, and WebP artwork, and export includes GIF, PNG sequences, APNG, MP4, and sprite sheets. The trade-off is platform and ecosystem scope: it is Windows-only, and no integrations are listed. Choose Phluxel for experimental procedural pixel animation; choose another tool if you need broader platform availability or an integration-led production workflow.
