Phaser is an open-source HTML5 game framework for building 2D games with JavaScript or TypeScript. It is aimed at developers targeting web browsers, with support for Canvas and WebGL rendering, scenes, game objects, input, asset loading, physics, animation and TypeScript definitions. Projects can also reach iOS and Android through external runtimes such as Capacitor, making Phaser a fit for web-first teams that want a path to mobile packaging without changing the core framework.

The product has a two-part structure. The Phaser framework is free and includes browser-based tools, a code editor with IntelliSense, pixel-art, tilemap and atlas editors, examples, API documentation and one-click game publishing. Phaser Editor is a separate commercial product priced at $12 per month on monthly billing. Its visual desktop editor runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and adds VSCode integration, MCP support for AI tools, physics and collision configuration, visual script nodes, reusable behavior prefabs and full commercial rights. Enterprise adds per-seat licensing and support, seat management, Google Workspace SSO, editor source-code availability and priority technical support.

Phaser’s ecosystem suits JavaScript-based workflows: integrations and related tooling include npm, CDN, VS Code, Capacitor, Colyseus and the Discord Embedded App SDK. Asset support spans audio, video, images, tilemaps and other formats, while custom builds and plugins allow projects to shape the framework around specific needs. The tradeoff is its focused 2D scope and reliance on external components for multiplayer features. Choose Phaser for browser-led 2D development and teams that value an open-source foundation; consider another engine if built-in networking or broader platform coverage is central to the project.
