Penpact review
A developer-focused signing API with cloud and self-hosted options, still in early development.

Penpact gives developers an e-signature API for adding document signing to their own products. It can create envelopes, upload PDFs, place signature and other fields, then send a signing link or show an embedded signing flow. The intended audience is teams that want to integrate signing rather than adopt a standalone signing workspace. Its TypeScript SDK, embeddable React component, and self-hosting option make it especially relevant to product developers who want control over the signing experience and deployment.
The API covers a broad signing workflow: templates and document merge, bulk sending, reminders, conditional fields, webhooks, and AI-assisted detection for signature, date, and name fields. Completed PDFs receive a PAdES digital seal, append-only audit trail, and Certificate of Completion. The Free plan includes embedding, themes, sandbox mode, SDK, webhooks, templates, and AI detection with the user's own key. Pro is listed at $19 per month and adds bulk send, reminders, conditional fields, managed AI detection, email support, and removal of Penpact attribution. Scale is usage-based at $0.12 per signed document and adds unlimited team members, audit-log export, and priority support; Enterprise adds signing certificates, SSO/SAML, SCIM, SLA, dedicated support, and compliance assistance.
Deployment choice is a central consideration. Self-host is listed as a one-time $0 option under AGPL-3.0, with unlimited documents on the user's own infrastructure; managed cloud is also available. The vendor describes the API as early development and not yet stable, and says managed-cloud access is currently free during early access while paid tiers are coming. That makes Penpact a fit for developers comfortable evaluating an evolving API or operating open-source software, not teams that need a stable signing system today. Buyers requiring a mature, production-ready API should consider alternatives until Penpact's stability improves.
Penpact pros and cons

- Typed TypeScript SDK, templates, webhooks, and bulk sending
- Self-host under AGPL-3.0 or use the managed cloud
- Where it doesn't
- The API is in early development and is not yet stable
- Managed-cloud paid tiers are described as coming
- Self-hosting requires running the service on your own infrastructure
