pdfplumber is a community-maintained, open-source Python library and command-line tool for inspecting PDFs and extracting text and tables. It is aimed primarily at people working with machine-generated PDFs, especially Python users who need more than plain text output. It can preserve page layout when extracting text, search for text and return match coordinates, and expose page objects such as characters, lines, rectangles, curves, and images. The command-line interface can export PDF data as CSV, JSON, or text, making it useful for local extraction workflows as well as Python code.

Its depth is in making a PDF's structure inspectable. Table detection can be adjusted with configurable strategies and tolerances, and visual debugging helps examine page and table structure when extraction needs tuning. Extracted tables are returned as rows and cells. pdfplumber also supports AcroForm value extraction, while its relationship with pdfminer.six is the listed integration. These capabilities suit solo users and small teams who want control over parsing and are prepared to work in code rather than use a hosted interface.

The project is free and open source, with documentation and community support. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows as a local Python package; its CLI adds a direct route for exporting results. Its boundaries matter: there is no OCR, and the project describes limited support for tables in OCR-processed documents. That makes it a poor fit for scanned-document pipelines. Choose pdfplumber for text and table extraction from machine-generated PDFs where layout and page objects matter; look elsewhere if OCR or a documented extraction API is central to the workflow.
