Payload CMS is an open-source, code-first headless CMS and TypeScript application framework for developers, marketers, agencies, and enterprise teams. It supports configurable collections and global documents, authentication, custom access control, localization, uploads, drafts, preview links, and live visual preview. Its self-hosted model fits teams building websites, internal tools, headless commerce projects, and digital asset management systems with control over their application infrastructure.

Its ecosystem is strongest around TypeScript and Next.js. Payload integrates directly into Next.js applications and can be self-hosted on infrastructure supporting Next.js and compatible databases, including MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. Stripe integration is also listed. For content delivery, the REST API includes CRUD operations, pagination, sorting, and localization parameters, while the extensible GraphQL API provides another delivery option. This combination suits teams that want content modeling and application development in a closely connected stack rather than a CMS isolated from the codebase.

Content operations cover configurable locales with fallback behavior, field- and document-level permissions, draft workflows, preview links, and live visual preview. Upload management includes automatic image cropping and resizing. These features give Payload a broad application-oriented scope, but the same breadth brings a clear trade-off: self-hosting places deployment and infrastructure responsibilities on the team. Payload Cloud deployment of new projects is currently paused, reinforcing the self-hosted emphasis. Choose Payload when TypeScript, Next.js, API flexibility, and infrastructure control are priorities; consider an alternative if a hosted-first or no-code editorial workflow is more important.

Payload CMS pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • REST and GraphQL APIs support flexible content delivery
    • Field- and document-level access control supports custom permissions
    • Next.js integration, drafts, previews, and localization support modern builds
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosting requires teams to manage deployment and infrastructure
    • Payload Cloud deployment of new projects is currently paused
    • The code-first approach may not suit teams seeking a no-code CMS
