Pawtograder is an open-source course-management and autograding platform for university programming courses. Students submit code through GitHub, while GitHub Actions runs autograders and returns test results, rubric scores, and feedback to the platform. It is designed for course staff who need assessment workflows around code repositories, rather than a general-purpose rubric tool for every subject.

Its strongest area is the connection between automated testing and structured assessment. Staff can build multi-level, multi-part rubrics, add line-level annotations, assign graders in bulk, and regrade cohorts. The gradebook supports expressions and what-if mode, while discussion boards, office-hours queues, surveys, polls, and self-assessment rubrics extend the platform into broader course operations. GitHub, GitHub Actions, Discord, Supabase, and MCP-compatible AI clients are supported integrations, and the MCP server provides AI-assisted course staff support.

Pawtograder is free and open source, with web, API, and self-hosted availability. The hosted community instance is described as free for instructors evaluating Pawtograder, while ongoing use at scale is handled by contacting the project. Self-hosting is available through Helm charts. The trade-off is specialization: it fits programming courses that already work with GitHub particularly well, but it does not provide LMS integration. Choose Pawtograder for code-centered courses needing autograding, analytic rubrics, and course-staff workflows. Choose another rubric platform if LMS connectivity or broader subject coverage is central.

Pawtograder pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • GitHub Actions autograding returns per-test results and feedback
    • Multi-level rubrics support detailed scoring and line-level annotations
    • Gradebook includes expressions, what-if mode, and cohort regrading
  • Where it doesn't
    • No LMS integration
    • Focused on programming courses rather than general assessment
    • Ongoing hosted use at scale requires contacting the project
