OpenWA review
A free, self-hosted gateway for developers automating WhatsApp messaging.

OpenWA is an open-source WhatsApp API gateway for developers and teams building messaging integrations. It provides a REST API for sending and receiving messages, alongside a web dashboard for managing sessions, webhooks, and API keys. Multi-session support lets users manage multiple WhatsApp accounts. Messaging covers text, media, documents, stickers, reactions, replies, forwards, and bulk sends, while contacts, groups, channels, labels, business profiles, and catalogs are also supported. Its focus is on programmable, self-hosted messaging rather than a managed service for teams that want a turnkey deployment.
The Free plan costs $0 forever and includes MIT-licensed code, self-hosted deployment, and no paid tier or feature locks. Developers can create, edit, delete, and list templates, with variable substitution, and configure per-session automation rules and auto-replies. Signed webhooks use HMAC verification. For data and media, OpenWA supports SQLite or PostgreSQL, with local, S3, or MinIO media storage; integrations also include Redis and Chatwoot. TypeScript, Python, and PHP SDK support is described, which may suit teams integrating the API into an existing software stack. The published plan structure is simple: there is no paid tier with additional features.
The main trade-off is its connection method: OpenWA uses unofficial, reverse-engineered WhatsApp Web clients rather than Meta’s official WhatsApp Business Cloud API, and account restriction or ban risk is stated. That makes it a poor fit where an official API connection is a requirement or account continuity is critical. Self-hosting also means the deployment runs in the team’s own environment, and collaboration features are limited. Choose OpenWA when control over deployment, open-source code, and flexible messaging automation matter more than an official Cloud API connection or broader collaboration tooling.
