A capable free DAW for multitrack production, MIDI, plugins, pitch work, and optional local AI.

OpenStudio is a free, open-source digital audio workstation for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It suits musicians, producers, and audio editors who need multitrack recording, timeline editing, MIDI composition, mixing, routing, plugin hosting, pitch work, and file export without a paid plan or account requirement. Its AGPLv3 license and desktop availability across three operating systems also make it relevant to users who value inspectable, extensible software.
The feature set covers a wide production workflow. Users can work with MIDI tracks, a piano roll, hardware MIDI input, instruments, channel strips, sends, buses, routing, metering, and automation. Plugin support includes VST3, CLAP, and LV2, with optional ARA2 hosting. Graphical pitch editing and real-time pitch correction add vocal and melodic editing capabilities, while the Neural Amp Modeler guitar rig includes cabinet impulse responses and effects. Lua scripting provides another path for customization.
OpenStudio also offers several specialized tools without introducing a paid tier: master and stem rendering supports WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, and OGG, and optional local AI tools provide generation and six-stem separation. That combination gives it broader production coverage than a narrowly focused editor, while keeping the workflow centered on local desktop work. Choose it if free, open-source production, plugin flexibility, MIDI, and optional local AI are priorities. Consider another option if your workflow depends on built-in cloud collaboration, named service integrations, or video synchronization.
