OpenResto review
A focused, open-source reservation system for teams that want control of their stack.

OpenResto is an MIT-licensed, self-hosted reservation and booking system for independent restaurants, bars, cafes, and similar venues. Guests browse availability, temporarily hold a table, and book through a browser without creating an account. Operators get a reservation dashboard with status filtering, table and floor-section controls, configurable booking pauses, branding options, and multi-location management from one instance. The product supports web, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted deployments.
Its pricing model is open source, with no per-cover fees described. Deployment uses Docker Compose and SQLite, while optional SMTP delivery supports guest booking reminders. Teams can also provide Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes. For technical operators, the combination of self-hosting, white-label name, color, icon, and PWA branding, plus scoped API keys and a headless CLI, gives the system a clear ownership and customization profile. The published feature set is particularly relevant when a restaurant wants to control hosting and present a branded booking experience.
OpenResto stays focused on reservations, table operations, and guest access rather than broader guest-flow tooling. Its booking model includes real-time five-minute table holds, reference-code lookup and cancellation, and optional reminders, but waitlist and deposit workflows are not part of its stated focus. That makes it a sensible fit for technical teams managing their own infrastructure and operating one or more locations with straightforward booking needs. Restaurants seeking a hosted service or workflows centered on waitlists and deposits should consider a different product category fit.
OpenResto pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Real-time five-minute table holds during booking
- Manage tables, floor sections, and multiple locations in one instance
- Scoped APIs, headless CLI, Docker Compose, and branded guest apps
- Where it doesn't
- Reservations focus on bookings rather than waitlist workflows
- Deposit collection is outside the described feature set
- Self-hosting places deployment and maintenance on the operator
