OpenMDAO is an open-source Python framework for systems analysis and multidisciplinary design optimization. Developed by NASA Glenn Research Center and founded in 2007, it is intended for engineers and researchers working with complex systems, including aerospace applications. Rather than generating CAD geometry as a finished application, it helps users decompose multidisciplinary models into coupled components, define variables, objectives, and constraints, and coordinate analysis and optimization workflows.

Its main strength is the depth of its optimization framework. OpenMDAO computes analytic, semi-analytic, and finite-difference derivatives, and provides sparse solvers and optimization drivers. Users can choose gradient-based or gradient-free optimization, explore design spaces, run design of experiments, and address mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems. MPI-based parallel execution supports multicore and high-performance computing environments, while the published feature set also includes serial execution. This combination suits teams developing custom optimization workflows that need simulation integration and control over model coupling, derivatives, and execution.

The trade-off is its scope. OpenMDAO is a framework for building engineering analysis and optimization systems, not a complete generative-design application with a turnkey CAD workflow. Teams that want to assemble models programmatically and connect multidisciplinary simulations should find its Python-centered approach aligned with their work. Teams seeking an interface focused on direct CAD generation or manufacturing-oriented generative design should choose a specialized application instead. Open-source availability also makes it appropriate for organizations that want to inspect, adapt, and extend a framework rather than adopt a packaged design product.

OpenMDAO pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports coupled multidisciplinary models and derivative computation
    • Combines gradient-based, gradient-free, and mixed-integer optimization
    • Runs design exploration and MPI-based workflows for HPC environments
  • Where it doesn't
    • Not a turnkey CAD generative-design application
    • Primarily intended for engineering analysis and research
    • Model definition centers on Python APIs and framework concepts
