OpenLoom review
A privacy-focused recorder with self-hosted sharing, but no editing or transcription.

OpenLoom is an open-source video messaging tool for individuals and teams that want to record and share screen videos while keeping storage under their control. Its Chrome extension captures entire screens, windows, tabs, camera video, microphone audio, and system audio, while the web viewer provides shareable links, password protection, timestamped emoji reactions, and basic view counts. It fits users who value ownership of recordings over a broader hosted-video feature set.
The pricing structure separates the software from its hosting. The Open Source plan is free, self-hosted, has no per-user pricing, and supports unlimited video length. Supabase Pro hosting is listed at $25 per month and adds 100 GB of storage and 250 GB of bandwidth. Recordings upload to the user's Supabase project, making Supabase the central ecosystem dependency. This model can suit teams that already manage Supabase infrastructure, while requiring more ownership of storage and hosting than a centralized SaaS product.
OpenLoom's standout strength is focused capture and controlled sharing: recordings can reach 1080p, links can be protected by passwords, and password-protected recordings use client-side AES-256-GCM protection. The trade-off is a narrow workflow. There is no built-in editing, transcription, AI summary, mobile recording, or centralized hosting, and viewer analytics are not built in. Choose OpenLoom for privacy-conscious screen messaging and self-managed storage; choose an alternative if editing, searchable transcripts, mobile capture, or detailed engagement reporting are core requirements.
