OpenJPEG review
A focused, self-hosted JPEG 2000 toolkit for developers who need codec control.

OpenJPEG is an open-source C library for JPEG 2000 encoding and decoding, aimed at developers integrating a codec into applications or processing image collections locally. Its command-line tools, including opj_compress and opj_decompress, convert supported raster formats to JPEG 2000 codestreams or JP2 files and back again. The project fits solo developers through enterprise teams that need self-hosted processing, a BSD 2-Clause license, and both reversible lossless and irreversible lossy compression.
Its main strength is codec depth. OpenJPEG exposes controls for quality layers, resolutions, tiles, and progression orders, while decoding can target selected regions or reduced resolutions. The library supports JPEG 2000 codestream, JP2, and JPT formats, with optional JPIP indexing and OpenJPIP components. Batch compression and decompression of image directories make the command-line tools suitable for repeatable local workflows, and the low-level C API provides a direct integration path for software that needs control over encoding or decoding behavior.
OpenJPEG is specialized rather than a general hosted image service. Teams must deploy and operate the library locally, and support is centered on documentation and community channels. The project’s repository currently labels itself unmaintained, even though the project site lists a 2.5.4 release from September 2025, so teams should weigh that status when planning long-lived dependencies. Choose OpenJPEG when JPEG 2000 support, configurable codec behavior, and local processing are priorities; consider an alternative when you need a hosted workflow or a broader, less codec-specific image platform.
OpenJPEG pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Lossless and lossy JPEG 2000 compression modes
- Batch processing for image directories
- Low-level C API with extensive codec controls
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on JPEG 2000 rather than broad image formats
- Self-hosted deployment requires local integration
- Project repository is currently labeled unmaintained
