OpenHTMLtoPDF review
A focused JVM library for HTML-based PDF generation, accessibility, and PDF/A output.

OpenHTMLtoPDF is an open-source, pure-Java library for developers building server-side document-generation workflows on the JVM. It renders well-formed XML/XHTML and some HTML5 using CSS 2.1 and later layout features, producing PDF or image output. The library supports Java and other JVM languages, runs with tested OpenJDK 8, 11, and 17 environments, and is compatible with Google App Engine Java environments. Its free plan and open-source model suit teams that want HTML-based document generation without a paid product tier.
Its strongest capability is the range of document-output requirements covered around HTML rendering. PDFBox-based rendering supports PDF generation, while additional features include PDF/A-compliant output, accessible PDF generation for PDF/UA, WCAG, and Section 508, PDF form controls, file embedding, and Java2D output. SVG and MathML plugins extend document content, and font fallback, custom fonts, RTL, and bidirectional text support help with varied document designs. These capabilities make it a practical fit for JVM applications that need structured, accessible, or archival documents from controlled HTML and XHTML templates.
The main trade-off is scope. OpenHTMLtoPDF is not a web browser: it does not execute JavaScript and does not implement many modern layout standards, including flexbox and grid. It is therefore better suited to predictable server-side templates than browser-dependent pages or workflows requiring extensive post-generation PDF manipulation. Choose it when free, open-source HTML-to-PDF generation is the priority, particularly with PDF/A, accessibility, fonts, forms, or JVM deployment. Choose an alternative when browser-level rendering or broader PDF operations are central requirements.
