A free, customizable core SIS for ministries, districts, and institutions.

OpenEMIS Core is an open-source, customizable web application for collecting, processing, and managing education information. It is designed for ministries, districts, schools, and other educational institutions that need a shared student information system across multiple administrative levels. The system covers student and staff information, institution records, student profiles, enrollment, attendance, academic records, assessments, examinations, report cards, and configurable education-sector workflows. It can run as a self-hosted application or be accessed through OpenEMIS cloud hosting.
Its main strength is breadth within core education data management. OpenEMIS Core connects institution assignment and enrollment workflows with attendance marking, viewing, importing, and exporting. Academic records, assessments, examinations, and report cards extend the system beyond basic registration. Customizable student profiles and downloadable records support different education-sector requirements, while configurable system settings allow workflows to be adapted across schools, districts, and national systems. This makes it a strong fit for organizations that need a common structure for records and reporting rather than a narrow school-level tool.
Integration is supported through API keys, GET and POST API endpoints, and webhooks, but the product’s integration coverage is limited. Organizations choosing OpenEMIS Core should be prepared to define how it connects with surrounding systems and whether cloud hosting or self-hosting best fits their operating model. The free, open-source core is suited to education systems seeking national-scale functionality without a paid license plan. Smaller institutions that need only basic student administration, or organizations prioritizing a broad prebuilt integration ecosystem, should consider a more narrowly focused or more connected alternative.
OpenEMIS Core pros and cons

- Manages student and staff records across school, district, and national levels
- Covers enrollment, attendance, assessments, examinations, and report cards
- Supports APIs, webhooks, customizable profiles, and downloadable records
- Where it doesn't
- Integration coverage is limited compared with broader connected ecosystems
- Self-hosting requires installation on the organization’s own infrastructure
- Its scope may exceed the needs of institutions seeking a simpler SIS
