opencast is a podcast app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that downloads and plays RSS podcasts, creates on-device transcripts, and detects high-confidence promotional breaks for skipping. It suits Apple users who want local transcription, searchable listening history, offline downloads, and private synchronization without creating an opencast account. The app also supports private feeds, OPML import and export, and Apple Vision according to its supported-platform listing.

Its strongest differentiator is the combination of transcription and discovery tools. On-device episode transcription includes follow-along highlighting, while full-text search covers library titles, notes, and transcripts. Episodes with transcripts can receive generated chapters and summaries. Voice Boost, playback speed controls, a sleep timer, and an Up Next queue address everyday playback needs. CarPlay, Siri, AirPlay, Apple Speech, Whisper, RSS, and iCloud connect the app closely to Apple’s ecosystem. The published description also states that opencast has no tracking SDKs.

The Free plan includes on-device transcription, ad skipping, podcast downloads, transcript search, and private iCloud sync. Optional one-time in-app purchases provide remote transcription credits through the 20 Transcription Hours and 100 Transcription Hours plans. That structure keeps core listening and local transcription available without a recurring plan, while remote processing is reserved for paid additions. Choose opencast if Apple platform support and local transcript features matter most. An alternative is more suitable for listeners who need Android, web, or broader cross-platform access, or who require ad detection beyond high-confidence breaks.
