OmniRec review
A private, automation-friendly recorder for local capture, transcription, and exports.

OmniRec is an open-source desktop screen recorder for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is aimed at users creating tutorials, recording meetings or gameplay, documenting software issues, and automating capture workflows. The application records an entire display, a single window, or a custom region, while handling system audio and microphone input together. Local processing keeps recordings on the device rather than uploading them.
Its strongest distinction is the combination of local transcription and automation. OmniRec can produce timestamped Markdown from locally transcribed speech, which fits documentation and reference workflows. Echo cancellation is available for microphone recordings, and dual-source audio mixing can combine system sound with microphone input. Export options include MP4, WebM, MKV, QuickTime, GIF, APNG, and WebP, giving users several formats for video, animation, and image output. The command-line interface also supports headless recording and automation, making the product relevant beyond manual desktop capture.
The main trade-off is its narrow, local-first scope. Webcam recording, integrations, cloud sharing, and editing are outside the stated feature set, so users seeking camera-in-frame production, collaborative review, or post-capture editing should choose a product built around those workflows instead. OmniRec is also in active development and is not yet available for general use; its current release is v0.2.1. It fits users who value open-source software, local handling of recordings, multiple export formats, and scripted capture. It is less suitable for teams that need a mature sharing or editing environment.
