NodeBB is an open-source community forum platform for organizations, product communities, support teams, and self-hosted projects. It supports topic and reply publishing through WYSIWYG and Markdown editors, real-time chat and notifications, user-created groups, tags, advanced search, private categories, role-based permissions, moderation controls, analytics, widgets, plugins, themes, and read/write APIs. Communities can self-host NodeBB under GPLv3 or choose managed hosting from NodeBB, Inc. Its strongest fit is for teams that want forum depth and control without committing to a high starting price.
Pricing is straightforward across the managed plans. Starter costs $20 per month and includes 50,000 pageviews, 5 GB storage, unlimited staff users, weekly backups, SSL, and custom plugins. Hamlet costs $100 per month with 500,000 pageviews and 20 GB storage, while Village costs $250 per month with 2,000,000 pageviews and 100 GB storage. City costs $750 per month and includes 10,000,000 pageviews and 300 GB storage. The higher plans add capacity and daily backups; all four list unlimited staff users, SSL, and custom plugins. A free plan and a 14-day free trial make NodeBB easier to evaluate for smaller communities.
NodeBB also suits organizations that need a community platform with extensibility and ecosystem connections. Plugin and theme support, drag-and-drop widgets, custom reports, spam-prevention integrations, and APIs provide several routes for adapting the forum to an existing service setup. Akismet, StopForumSpam, Project Honeypot, Facebook, Google, and Twitter are listed integrations. Choose NodeBB when self-hosting, private spaces, moderation, and community interaction matter more than a member-based pricing model. Consider an alternative if your priority is a narrowly focused platform with simpler customization or pricing based on member counts.
