NetLogo ProbLab review
A free collection of probability simulations for classroom exploration, not a full statistics suite.

NetLogo ProbLab is a collection of interactive models for learning probability and statistics through simulation. It suits educators teaching probability concepts and learners who benefit from exploring outcomes rather than relying only on explanations. Models such as SAMPLER Solo and Prob Graphs Basic let users investigate sampling, distributions, histograms, and statistical inference. Its classroom orientation is a good fit for lessons built around experiments, but it is narrower than a complete statistics learning environment.
The collection focuses on concrete probability activities: sampling from a simulated population, comparing estimates with classroom-style guesses, exploring sample spaces and random events, and viewing distributions. Other models plot cumulative probability rates across repeated trials and show attempts-until-success and successes-per-sample distributions. Learners can also examine 9-block outcomes and their frequency distributions. These activities provide a clear route into observing how repeated trials and samples produce patterns; they are less suited to buyers seeking broad statistics instruction beyond the topics represented by the models.
NetLogo is free, and the models are accessed through its desktop application, with selected models available in NetLogo Web. Supported platforms include Windows, macOS, and Linux for desktop use, alongside web access for supported models. This makes the collection practical where an instructor wants to assign a specific browser-accessible model or use the desktop application. The product is a curricular model collection rather than a separately priced standalone application. Choose ProbLab for guided probability experiments and classroom simulations; look elsewhere if the priority is a broad, unified statistics course or a dedicated standalone learning platform.
NetLogo ProbLab pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Simulates sampling from a population and compares estimates with guesses
- Models random events, sample spaces, and probability distributions
- Selected models run on the web; NetLogo also supports desktop platforms
- Where it doesn't
- A curricular model collection, not a standalone application
- Coverage centers on probability and selected statistics topics
- Web access is limited to supported models
