NeoReader is a free browser-based scanner for people who need to read QR codes and barcodes across phones and computers. It supports QR codes and formats including EAN, UPC, Code 128, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417. Scanning can start from a camera or webcam, or from an uploaded, pasted or dropped photo or screenshot. It can also find multiple codes in one image, making it useful when codes appear together rather than one at a time.

Its scanning options cover different contexts: a browser extension can scan codes on web pages, while the browser-based scanner can process images and camera input. Before a link opens, NeoReader displays its decoded destination and checks for common phishing indicators. According to the vendor, scans are decoded in the browser and are not received or stored by NeoReader. The scanner can work offline after its engine has been saved on the device. The original iPhone and Android apps have been retired; phone access is now through a browser and can be added to the home screen.

NeoReader suits solo users and small teams looking for a free scanner across web, iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux, with a Chrome extension also available. It is a better fit for occasional, flexible scanning than workflows that depend on a built-in scan archive: the scanner itself does not retain scan history, though the browser extension has an optional history setting. Choose it for camera, image and web-page scanning with link previews; choose another tool if retained history or a current native mobile app is essential.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Original iPhone and Android apps have been retired; phone access is through a browser.
    • The scanner itself does not retain scan history.
    • Requires saving the scanner engine on a device before offline use.
